Born on Earth Janeway is the daughter of an intellectual mathematician and an intelligent Starfleet engineer.
Edward Janeway has high expectations of his daughter and she struggles never to disappoint him.
She is raised in a traditional manner. Cooking real food instead of using a replicator. As a child she often resents her parents traditional ways.
When Janeway graduates from Starfleet Academy she pursues a scientific career and is assigned to the USS Icarus under the Command of Admiral Owen Paris. Her first assignment leads to her being held captive in a barbaric Cardassian prison. But she's rescued by Lt Justin Tighe. During their escape from the Cardassian patrols, her quick thinking saves them both and this leads Admiral Paris to recommend she seek a Command position.
Janeway and Justin fall in love and plan to marry. But disaster strikes when she, her father and Justin are involved in a shuttle crash and both her Father and Justin perish.
Only the support of her Mother and Sister enable her to emotionally survive the ordeal.
Returning to Starfleet her Command abilities are obvious and by the mid 2360's she's already achieved the rank of Commander.
Her dedication to Starfleet soon earns her the Command of the USS Bonestell. Her 1st mission is a 6 month survey of the Beta quadrant collecting information on microsecond pulsars. After the mission ends Janeway attends a review board (as do all captains after lengthy missions). One of the members of the panel is a young tactical ensign. A Vulcan called Tuvok, who points out various errors the Captain made during the assignment.
