Picard was born in the French village of Labarre in 2305.

The Picard family consists of his parents, Maurice and Yvette and his older brother Robert. They live on a tradition vineyard.

When he decides to join Starfleet his family didn't agree with his choice of a career. Although proud of his traditional past Jean Luc always looked towards the future. His Father and brother both expressed DEEP dissatisfaction with his decision to leave Earth and pursue a life in space and this lead to a estrangement between them.

As a child Picard enjoyed building ships in bottles and perhaps this lead to his thirst for exploration. Another influence may have been the times he visited the Smithsonian Institute, and saw the Phoenix, the first ship ever to travel at warp that was designed, built and piloted by Zefram Cochrane.

In 2322 Picard tried and failed to enter Starfleet, but a year later he re-applied and was successful. In 2327 he graduated from the Academy. Short after his graduation Picard was on shore leave and he got into a fight with some Nausicaans. The fight resulted in Picard being stabbed through the heart. This meant he would have to live the rest of his life with an artificial heart.

Early in he career Picard was assigned to the USS Stargazer. During his time as a Lieutenant Jean Luc was present at the wedding of Spock.

In 2333 Picard was forced to take command of the Stargazer when his Captain was killed during battle. Soon after that he was offered permanent command of the Stargazer and became one of the youngest Captains in Starfleet history at 28.

During the 20+ years Picard spent as the Stargazers Captain he saw many conflicts including one with the Ferengi. A manoeuver which he used during the battle was named after him, "The Picard manoeuver"
